This year the KL Open will be played from 4-8 September and squeezing in 9 rounds over 5 days is not easy but because it is held during Ramadhan (where Muslims fast all month) we will have the games played even earlier than normal!
For sure there is an upside in that evenings will be totally free and there will be a chance for our guests from overseas to enjoy, perhaps to even participate in, the daily festivities than begin with the breaking of fast daily.

The prize giving and closing ceremony will be held together with a blitz tournament on the morning of 9 September and will certainly be graced by Kuala Lumpur Chess Association President Dato' Edmund Santhara.
In effect too will be the now "standard" time control of 90 minutes plus a 30 second time increment from move one and of course we will be applying the zero tolerence rule for the start of each game as it is now in force.

Farewell IGB Malaysian Open and Welcome KL Open!
Congratulations to Dato' Tan Chin Nam for a hosting a nice farewell with the 6th IGB Malaysian Open and even more so to the success of young Parimarjan Negi of India who has been starting to fulfill the promise of two years ago when he became a World's Youngest Grandmaster.
Now the ASTRO Merdeka Rapid Teams (29-31 August) is going on but many are using this event too as a warm up for the KL Open which starts two days later and so I am able to publish the list of participants at http://www.chess-results.com/tnr24792.aspx?lan=1 (although I suppose there will be last minute entries by locals).
The technical team is led by Sebastian Simanjuntak from Indonesia who will take the key postion of Chief Arbiter, and assisting him will be Praful Zaferi from India, Elsa Yueh from Chinese Taipei and Marcus Yeoh from Penang.
And to work with me on all things media, we have international TV documentary producer Vijay Kumar, journalist Kristianus Liem, and of course the famed Gilachess Andrew Ooi.
The venue is Shah's Village Hotel and games will be at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily 4-8 September 2009 except on Sunday morning where we will accomodate those who decided to party the night before and thise who wish to have a leisurely or spiritual morning.
